What should you focus on when preparing for a scholarship or tertiary admission interview?

Knowing the types of questions candidates have encountered helps you identify the experiences, motivations and issues you need to think through. This workshop draws on insights from coaching candidates across scholarships and tertiary courses to help students approach their preparation with greater purpose.

Suitable for students applying for both public and private sector scholarships, the workshop helps participants consider how their strengths, aspirations and motivations align with the sponsoring organisation. It also supports students preparing for admission interviews across a range of tertiary courses.

Through interview examples, guided discussion and practical exercises, participants will learn to understand what interviewers are looking for, develop thoughtful responses and express themselves confidently.

What You Will Learn

• Gain insights from past interview questions. Explore examples across scholarships and tertiary courses to recognise recurring themes, understand what interviewers are looking for and identify where to focus your preparation.

• Adapt to different interview formats. Gain exposure to general and panel interviews, video interviews using interview software, and Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) stations. Discuss how to approach scenario-based and role-play questions, including how to assess the situation, explain your reasoning and respond thoughtfully.

• Handle different question types. Practise approaching questions about yourself, your aspirations, past experiences and hypothetical situations.

• Understand the interviewer’s perspective. Explore what interviewers assess and how your answers help them understand your strengths, motivations and suitability.

• Build clear, convincing responses. Learn to select relevant examples, organise your ideas and support your statements with evidence.

• Review and improve your own performance. Recognise what makes an answer effective and learn practical ways to evaluate your responses and refine your preparation.

How the Workshop Works

The workshop combines sharing and discussion of past interview questions with active practice. Using selected questions, participants will analyse standard and strong responses to understand what makes an answer more effective and what it reveals to the interviewer.

Participants will have opportunities to try answering selected questions, listen to others’ responses and learn from the feedback provided. Questions will be drawn from different interview formats, including panel interviews, video interviews, scenario-based and role-play questions.

Who Should Attend?

Current students and recent graduates from Junior Colleges, MI, Polytechnics and ITE who are preparing for public or private sector scholarship interviews, or tertiary admission interviews.

Upper Secondary students who wish to start preparing are also welcome.

About the Trainer

Siew Ling Hwang is the founder of Discovering Potential and an Interview Coach with extensive experience coaching students for scholarship and tertiary admission interviews.

Having coached numerous candidates across scholarships, institutions and courses, Siew Ling has gained detailed insights into the questions asked, the follow-up discussions they lead to and the expectations candidates encounter. These insights shape the workshop’s examples and discussions, helping students identify what to explore in greater depth and where to focus their preparation.

Her coaching experience includes candidates for public and private sector scholarships offered by organisations such as PSC, SAF, MOE, MHA, MCI, MINDEF, MPA, MOH, URA, MND, SIA, CAAS and CAG, as well as scholarship and course admission interviews at NUS, NTU, SMU and SUSS. She has also coached students for admission to overseas universities, with her course-specific coaching spanning Medicine, Dentistry, Law, Physiotherapy and Pharmacy, among others. In addition, she has designed and conducted interview and communication workshops for tertiary institutions, schools and organisations across Singapore.

Siew Ling is also a Certified Advanced Behavioural & Career Consultant and a Certified Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming. Her coaching focuses on helping students understand the interviewer’s perspective, recognise what they have to offer and express themselves in their own voice.
